Thank U, Next [Review]

February 10, 2019Shanese

It was just a few months ago when Ariana Grande came out with Sweetener. A lot has happened since it’s release, some things I would consider unfortunate and heartbreaking. But nonetheless, Ariana rose above all of that and partically said “You know what, I’m going to do what I do best and that’s make music.” And as such she gave the world thank u, next.

Now I know I’m a little late with this review, like 2 days late but I had things to do and I got the album like 23 hours after it came out. So, yeah and yes I know that’s late too. I honestly wasn’t in a rush to get the album and I wanted to savour it on my time and not rush it nor this review. I literally had the entire album on repeat three times.

When I listen to music, I tend to focus on the beat more than the words. So listening to thank u, next on repeat 3 times was perfect for me because it gave me a chance to hear what the lyrics are and the meaning behind them. I may misinterpret some things or rather my understanding is going to be totally different from other people’s perception. And that’s perfectly fine.

thank u, next album cover

So Miss Ariana Grande’s album, thank u, next has a total of 12 songs and was released at midnight on February 8, 2019. This is her fifth studio album. So three songs were released prior to the album’s release and those are thank u, next, 7 rings and break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored. She’s been teasing the song titles in a lot of music videos such as breathin’, thank u, next and 7 rings.

thank u, next, the song, was released in November 2018. Literally one month after she called off her engagement to Pete Davidson. Thank u, next was just a way for her to express how she felt about it all and coming to terms with herself. A lot of people, for some odd reason, thought that she was coming out as a lesbian when she said …

Plus, I met someone else
We havin’ better discussions
I know they say I move on too fast
But this one gon’ last
‘Cause her name is Ari
And I’m so good with that (So good with that)

Let’s be real here, she clearly meant herself here. So thinking she came out was a reach. It just meant that she was going to love herself and focus on herself more. Another reach was when the tracklist came out and fans saw NASA, they thought it had something to do with Pete Davidson because he has a pullover with NASA on it. Is it about a man? Yes, because Ariana confirmed that herself. But is it about Pete? I don’t think so.

I could talk about how I feel about every song on the album but I feel like that’s too much. So instead, I’ve decided to talk about two just to save some reading time. And time for myself because this album is too much and I need a new wig because well, Ariana snatched mine and ran with it.

break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored

As we know, the video for break up with your girlfriend, i’m bored came out before the album. I thought, by the name of the song, that she wanted to be with a guy. But what I realized in the video is that the girlfriend looks a lot like Ariana.

So then I saw a tweet which said that the song is about Ariana wanting the girlfriend instead of the guy. Then it made perfect sense. She’s saying let’s break up so that she can be with herself more since the girlfriend is an Ariana look alike.

ghostin’

Let’s talk about ghostin’ shall we? In a way it reminds me of better off from Sweetener. Well I think they’re similar in some way. But this is such an amazing and sad song all at the same time. I knew, well I guess everyone knew that the death of Mac Miller would have or did take a toll on Ariana.

I actually hoped it wouldn’t cause a rift in her relationship with Pete. But it’s clear that it did and I feel like Ariana didn’t want it to but it’s not easy to control your emotions, especially since Ariana and Mac had history. The great news is she’s over it.

Final Thoughts

Ariana came to step on a lot of our necks with this album. I absolutely love this album. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting an album so soon after Sweetener but with all that Ariana went through close to the end of 2018, I’m glad she channeled all that energy into her craft. And I hope she continues to do so and well, take people’s wigs while she’s at it.

My favourite songs from the album are bloodline, fake smile, bad idea, make up, 7 rings and breakup with your girlfriend, i’m bored. I like these songs more because these are songs I would have on repeat. Would I have the whole album on repeat? Of course! But I like to pick random songs to listen to and those 6 are songs I’d pick from the entire album. And maybe throw in thank u, next if I’m feeling up to it.

Should everyone buy, stream or download this album? Definitely. Especially if you’re the ultimate Ariana stan. It’s truly an amazing album and I love that Ariana is trying more new sounds. Ariana is growing musically, and overall, and I’m here for it.

So what are your thoughts on thank u, next? What are your favourite songs from the album? Would you play the entire album on repeat? And is your wig missing after listening to this album?
