Sweetener [Review]

“God is a woman”. I think otherwise meaning that I think God is love but that’s a discussion for another day. However, what I do know is that God has blessed the world with many talented persons. One such person is Ariana Grande and today, I’ll be reviewing Sweetener.

Sweetener day has come and gone. I know a lot of her fans have been waiting for this album forever. I’m not a huge fan but God is a woman and no tears left to cry were the songs that made me want to get this album. So I got it, obviously.

Sweetener, Ariana’s fourth studio album, was released on Friday, August 17, 2018. The album has a total of 15 songs, the first song being an interlude or an intro so to speak. Three songs were released prior to the album, one of which was a promotional single. Most of the tracks are written in lowercase letters and two tracks are written in sentence case. It features vocals from Pharrell Williams, Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliot.

“The light is coming to take back everything the darkness stole.”

I believe Ariana is telling her story in this album. Letting listeners know what she’s been through. There’s so much you can share on social media but you never truly know what goes on in their daily life. You know, keep your private life private. I have seen where some fans have said that they won’t listen to the song, pete davidson.

I’ve even heard some say that she cheated on Mac Miller. I don’t know the full story so I can’t make any conclusions. All I know, or most persons know, is that as she proclaimed, her relationship with Mac Miller was toxic.

In this album, you can hear a change in the way Ariana sings. Based on a few songs from her previous albums, she would literally “scream” whenever she hit a high note. In Sweetener, she has, dare I say, perfected hitting a high note without screaming too much. And I bet, all that screaming took a toll on her vocally. Who knows, I’m just saying.

A lot of persons believe that her song God is a woman is her telling people that well God is a woman. It’s about women empowerment and in some way, encouraging women to stay strong and fight the good fight. I watched two reaction videos on YouTube which featured elders and a priest just to see what they thought about the song. The visual for God is a woman was extremely amazing and powerful. The gopher situation from the video was explained here.

“You’ll BELIEVE God is a woman.”

The verdict, I like this album. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. The beats are amazing. The lyrics are meaningful. Her vocals are spectacular. The entire feel of the album is really amazing. You can hear how passionate she is in every single song. I loved that she’s explored different sounds instead of her regular Pop sound. My favourite songs are God is a woman, sweetener, better off, successful, breathing and no tears left to cry.

You can tell that she’s changing or has changed for the better. She has grown into being the woman she wants to be. Even without her Instagram, you can tell that she’s really in love and happy to be with Pete. You can hear when you listen to the song, pete davidson, as well as in the interviews she has done since the engagement.

Well, that’s all I have to say. Have you listened to Sweetener? What was your initial reaction to the album? What are your overall thoughts on the album? Let me know in the comments below. Thank you for reading and wherever you are in the world, I hope you have a great day or night.

    1. So, I never really rocked with Ariana like that. I have it in my head that I’m far too old for this new generation of talent. But I gave some songs on “sweetner” a listen and I’m PLEASANTLY surprised. “Borderline” gives me that late 90s/early 00s Missy feeling that I LOVE and she sounds amazing. I’m going to listen to more than just the 4 song that I have on repeat, but Ariana really DID THAT.

    2. I had to admit that I was a little disappointed in the album, I don’t know if it’s because the style of the songs aren’t really what I listen too but I believe with a powerful voice like hers she could of stripped back a lot of the music and focused more on the words and her voice. I still love most of the songs and still adore Ariana so this isn’t hate just an opinion.

    3. I’ve always like Ariana’s voice but have never listened to any of her albums through until this one. I absolutely loooved the God is a Woman music video though, so I listened to sweetener, and I’m a fan. Her vocals are just incredible, and I feel like you can go as deep or as shallow with her music as she wants to since she’s good at layering meaning in her lyrics.

    4. Thanks for the review, I’ve been meaning to listen to her album but haven’t yet. What are your two favorite tracks?
