Queen [Review]

It has been a very long time since I’ve written an actual post and reviewed an album. Drake’s album, Scorpion, and Travis Scott’s Astroworld, came out and I didn’t get the chance to review them but that’s ok. Today, even though it’s quite obvious, I’ll be reviewing Nicki Minaj’s new album, Queen.

Now I know everyone has their thoughts and opinions about Nicki Minaj herself. Some people love her, some people hate her and others just don’t care. I have read a lot of what people think about her on Instagram and Twitter. All I can say is that some of these comments really aren’t necessary.

Queen, which is Nicki’s fourth studio album, was released on Friday, August 10, 2018. I actually had no idea it was came out until I watched a 58-minute long reaction video on YouTube. That was my mistake but I couldn’t really hear any of the songs in the reaction video.

The album has a total of 19 songs with 2 songs being an interlude and an outro. Queen features vocals from Labrinth, Eminem, Lil Wayne, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Foxy Brown, Future and Swae Lee from Rae Sremmurd. The visual for Ganja Burn was released after the album came out.

So here’s what I think about this album. I like it but I’m not obsessed with it. Overall, I give it an 8 out of 10. The beats are amazing. I love that she brought in some Caribbean beats. You mostly hear it at the end of Majesty and in Coco Chanel. Persons who don’t know much about music from the Caribbean wouldn’t have been aware of it.

Her most talked about song, Barbie Dreams, is well pretty funny. A lot of persons have said that Lil Kim’s version of Biggie Small’s Dream (Just Playing) is better than Barbie Dreams. I’ve listened to all three versions and the better version is obviously Biggie Small’s. Nicki’s version is an exact copy (with her own lyrics) of Biggie’s. Yes, Lil Kim made her own version but I don’t see any similarities between Nicki’s and Lil Kim’s. However, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being inspired by another artist.

I’m not here to discuss any drama happening between Nicki Minaj and other persons in the music industry. It’s not in my place to make a comment on a situation that I don’t know about. I’m just giving a review on her latest album and that’s it. There’s always Instagram and Twitter for persons to voice their opinions on the matter.

Anyways, like I mentioned before, I like the album. However, in my opinion, I think the PinkPrint is better than Queen. My favourite songs from Queen are Majesty, Barbie Dreams, Come See About Me, Coco Chanel and Chun Swae up until the part where the singing/rapping ends.

It’s truly not a bad album as some persons are making it out to be. I feel that majority of the negative comments it has received are from persons who do not like Nicki Minaj on a whole. And there are others that genuinely dislike the album. A lot of persons have compared Cardi B’s Invasion of Privacy to Queen but they are two completely different bodies of work.

Well that’s all I have to say. Have you listened to Queen? What was your initial reaction to the album? What are your overall thoughts on the album? Let me know in the comments. Thank you for reading and wherever you are in the world, I hope you have a great day or night.
