I Got Scammed
Scamming, it’s one of those things that evil and malicious people do to make money. Instead of going out like normal, hard-working people and getting a job, these people choose to take money from those persons who legally earned it. And it makes me sad and sick to my stomach that people would actually do it.
Recently (like about 4 months ago), I got scammed which is more so why I decided to talk about this. Here’s how I found out I got scammed. I was about to make a purchase and my card declined twice. Now I knew there was money in my bank account so that really shouldn’t have been happening to me. So then I went to check my account online and saw that money was gone or rather being held. When I saw that I had no money, I was confused and I started having a headache because I felt stressed out.
So I called my bank, asked the representative what was going on and said to them that I didn’t make any purchases with my card and that what they were seeing on their system wasn’t from me. So immediately, they blocked my card and as a way to cope with that, I started to cut my card because I had absolutely no use for it anymore. I told my mom what happened and she could see for herself that my account was tampered with (because her name is on my account and she has access to it – she can’t make any withdrawals from my account, only deposits). So I was left flat broke, except for some cash that I had on hand that I was afraid to spend because I didn’t want it to run out.
A few years ago, scamming was a big issue. When I was in my final year of high school, a lot of elderly American citizens were scammed. And some years after that, like in 2016, in my country, a lot of persons would use the ATM, withdraw their money and the next day or a couple hours even, had no money in their account. This actually happened to almost a handful of my friends and because of that, I was fearful of using the ATM because I didn’t want it happening to me. I would literally avoid a specific ATM so that I wouldn’t fall victim to what was happening. The culprits were found and the thing about that is they weren’t citizens of my country.
In my case, I thought of different possible ways in which these persons or whoever it was got a hold of my account. And seeing as whoever it was made an online purchase, I wondered how they got my card number. So it was a Sunday when I found out money was missing from my account and I had used my card at a local store two days before. In my mind, I thought that the machine that was used to swiped my card was probably rigged. My friend who I told about what happened thought that it could have been a card magnet. To be honest, I don’t know how those work.
Like I said, I was left broke but for like 3-5 days since I cancelled my card, the online transaction that was made couldn’t necessarily go through. And even if it did go through, it would be the bank’s responsibility to give me back my money. After blocking my card, I went to the bank to get a new card and file a report just in case nothing happened in terms of me getting back my money.
Being without money for a whole week is stressing and then hearing that you’d have to wait a few more days really pissed me off because I need money in order to buy things to cook to eat. And I know and understand that there are persons out in the world that face a harder and harsher realities but it’s not my reality and I am grateful that I don’t have to experience that. I pray that I won’t have to and when I do start to make money of my own, I do plan to help those in need because they didn’t ask to be placed in their current situation.
I am lucky that this form of scamming happened through my bank account and not like the other cases where people actually sent their money through companies like Western Union. And if I’m being totally honest, not to be harsh or anything, it is both the victims fault and the person who is scamming them. If you know that you didn’t enter any competition to win money and this fake organization is requesting that you send them money in order to get the money that you won, wouldn’t you think that there’s something fishy going on?
Who sends money to receive money? It’s not a smart move to send money to a random stranger especially if they’re calling you from a different area code. Someone from a country tried it with my father and I googled the area code to see which country it was. What they did was, they called and asked for my father and when they heard he wasn’t around, they’d just hang up immediately before you could ask “Who is this?” or “Would you like to leave a message?”.
I think phone scamming is still possibly going on so please be aware of it and don’t give out your information to any unknown person calling you from an unknown number. And if you realize that there’s some suspicious activity going on in your bank account, alert your bank. Some banks already offer the service where they can see that your account is being tampered with and some banks don’t. Always kept abreast with your account because you may never know if there’s something wrong with it.
Okay so that’s it for today. I did get back my money after like 2-3 months after I filed the complaint. I know that in different countries, it would take a much shorter time to get back what was stolen from you. So I just wanted to share my experience of being scammed with you guys and if this has happened to you, let me know in the comments below. If you do plan to comment about your experience being scammed, please do not disclose the sum of money that was taken from you. Just say that it happened (or not) and explain how you dealt with it.
