What a week! I haven’t felt inspired to write a post in a long time but here I am. I see a lot of people giving their two cents on a lot of things that has been happening in the music industry. And well, if everyone can give their own two cents, why can’t I? I’ve been itching to talk about these past events so these are my unfiltered opinions about what’s been happening in hip-hop today.
Mac Miller’s Death
I won’t lie, I was pretty blown away by the fact that Mac Miller died so suddenly. It was totally unexpected and the entire world felt it. Mac Miller died at the age of 26 from a suspected drug overdose on September 7, 2018 at his home in Studio City, Los Angeles, California. He was a rapper and a producer under the alias Larry Fisherman.
It’s no secret that he suffered from substance abuse. He has even confessed to being a substance abuser in his songs and in the interviews he has done. He even stated that it was one of the factors that had caused his relationship with Ariana Grande to come to an end.
What unnerved me the most about his untimely death was how the media was portraying it. A few media outlet had as their headline, “Mac Miller, Ariana Grande’s ex-boyfriend, …”, instead of, “Mac Miller, rapper and producer, …”. In fact, a lot of ignorant people were in Ariana’s comments blaming her for his death. She has nothing to do with his death and it was very disheartening and upsetting to see people blame her for it. Ariana did her very best to help him while they were together and a close friend of Mac Miller, Shane Miller, confirmed it on his podcast.
It’s very unfortunate that Mac Miller has died and at such a young age too. I’m still in disbelief at all of this. He was extremely talented and I pray his soul is finally at peace.
Rest In Peace Malcolm James McCormick.
Cardi B VS Nicki Minaj
Now, what can I say about this? I don’t even know but as far as I go with this, I’m not picking any sides. Ever since late last year, there has been a “feud” conjured up between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj. I’m not sure why and I’m not sure who has the answers either. But somehow, I feel as though this, dare I say, imaginary beef between the two female rappers was started by both their individual fan base.
However, I’ve realized that ever since Cardi B has become mainstream, Nicki has been receiving a lot of hate. Sure she was getting hate before Cardi B came into the picture but now, it just seems that there’s a whole lot more. I know a lot of persons knew of Cardi when she appeared in Love & Hip-Hop: New York but I didn’t know she existed until Bodak Yellow. Do I listen to her songs? No. Mostly because lyrically, they make no sense to me but they do have very catchy choruses/hooks. Do all of Nicki’s songs make sense? No, not all but she is lyrically better than Cardi B in my opinion.
New York Fashion Week
Anyways, let’s talk about New York Fashion Week and what happened. Apparently, this is not the first time that Cardi B has tried to fight a woman. Reportedly (and allegedly), she was in an altercation with some women at a strip club over her husband, Offset. In my opinion, she shouldn’t have fought the women from the strip club. Whatever the case was, she should have taken it up with her husband because it is his doing.
So at NYFW, Cardi B wanted to fight Nicki Minaj over a tweet on Twitter. The tweet in question was about her newborn daughter. It was alleged that Nicki liked a tweet that another user made about her daughter. Now, I don’t know, no, we don’t know how true this is. The only person that can say that Nicki did in fact like the tweet would be the owner of the tweet. Do I believe that Nicki liked a tweet about Cardi’s daughter? No. Do I believe that someone is feeding this information to Cardi B? Possibly.
A lot of celebrities have come forth to give their two cents on the situation and from what I’ve seen, there are those who are taking Cardi B’s side. Of course, there are those who chose not to take sides. I do think a lot of false accusations are being made towards Nicki since Cardi B made a post on Instagram right after the altercation happen. Is Cardi B lying? I don’t know but like I said, I kind of do believe that she’s being fed wrong information.

As usual, a lot of fans, for both parties, have come forth to defend their respective artist. After the altercation, Nicki Minaj took to her Queen Radio to defend herself with a few proofs about things Cardi B has said in the past. However, while Nicki was saying that she doesn’t care about people’s parenting skills or child, a few persons were quick to say that she was being a hypocrite since in her song, No Frauds, she said something in regards to Remy Ma’s parenting skills. I think contradicting yourself is different from being a hypocrite but hey, the lyrics speak for themself.
“What type of mother leave her one son over a stack?”
-No Frauds by Nicki Minaj featuring Drake & Lil’ Wayne
Let me wrap this part up. These are my two cents: 1. I believe that there’s a time and a place for everything and what happened at NYFW shouldn’t have happened in the first place. You’re at an event with a lot of celebrities, you’re wearing very high fashion, couture outfits, you’re in a highly professional setting and it looks bad on the celebrity if they acted in the way Cardi B did.
It not only looks bad on the celebrity, it also looks bad on the designer of the outfit too because they’re probably thinking that they don’t want this celeb in their clothes if they’re going to act so poorly. It doesn’t matter if Cardi B is from the Bronx or if that’s her personality, what happened at NYFW could potentially damage her career. If she doesn’t want her career to plummet, she’s going to have to tone down on picking fights with women (and stop throwing her shoes).
Finally, my last cent, 2. There’s two sides to every story and there’s no way to tell which story is true and which isn’t. I personally don’t think Nicki has tried or is trying to stop anyone’s “bags” and again, I don’t think she liked any tweet about Cardi’s daughter. Cardi B also has no proof of Nicki liking any such tweet. We need proof from both parties before we can make a conclusion. Either way, these two women need to work out their differences and come to a resolve.
Kamikaze, Eminem & MGK
Alas we’re at the final topic for this post. I know, who uses “alas” anymore? Anyways, Eminem dropped surprise album, Kamikaze, on August 31, 2018. Obviously no one knew it was coming but I found out by going through my explore on Twitter. I read some of the tweets to #KAMIKAZE and well, I instantly downloaded the album. I did not do a review post of the album simply because I didn’t feel like it and I just wanted to enjoy it and soak in every rhyme, every bar, every lyric and every beat. My favourite songs from Kamikaze are Lucky You featuring Joyner Lucas, The Ringer and Nice Guy featuring Jessie Reyez.
Now, Eminem came for a lot of people and out the many, only one of them responded with a diss track. In fact, I didn’t even know that MGK was involved in any of the songs on this album. People are saying that the song, Not Alike, was a jab at him (allegedly). From Not Alike, all I personally got was Eminem saying that he’s not like all the other rappers that are currently in the industry. Which is true, he really isn’t. He is one of the greatest of all time (GOAT).
So anyways, MGK made a diss song, Rap Devil, in response to Eminem. I made an attempt to listen to it but I couldn’t bring myself to listen to the whole thing. The most I listened to were the first few lines where MGK said that Eminem’s beard is weird, that Em is a GOAT and he also said something about Em’s daughter Hailie and his age. From what I’ve heard, it’s not the first time MGK has mentioned Hailie’s name. He’s also not the only rapper to do so either.
Everyone knows that Eminem is protective of his daughter and that was his last straw. With that being said, on Friday September 14, 2018, Eminem released #KILLSHOT which is his response to Rap Devil. In my opinion, MGK shouldn’t have made the diss track to Eminem in the first place because Killshot bodied in him. I know I may sound biased because I’m an Eminem fan but if you’re going to diss someone, don’t say stupid things, say something that’s more factual. You don’t go from insulting them to complimenting them in the time and space of one second.

“You’re fucking salty ’cause young Gerald’s balls deep inside of Halsey”
This is the thing too, Eminem is a lyrical rhyming genius, saying “your beard is weird” isn’t going to cut it. If MGK plans to respond to Killshot, which for his sake I hope he doesn’t, he’s going to have to go big, be bold and actually make sense and be raw. No more autotune, just his raw voice. I’ve only ever listened to one song by MGK and that was Invincible featuring Ester Dean, and that’s a good, raw voiced song. No more “your beard is weird” and no more mentioning of Hailie because all in all, she has absolutely nothing to do with her father’s career.
I heard that Teshaki69 made a response to Kamikaze. I’m not sure how true that is but Joe Budden had something to say (obviously). To be honest, I never knew who Joe Budden was and I had no idea that he had done music in the earlier part of his career. So I was confused as to why he had this “beef” with Eminem. What blew my mind was that he’s the one behind the song Pump It Up, which was on one of the Fast & Furious soundtracks. Love that song by the way, it has a really nice vibe.
I believe a lot of people are waiting to hear Joe’s response in the form of a rap (not a podcast). I heard that the issue Joe has with Eminem is based off some things in the past. Reportedly, Joe was signed to Eminem’s record label and was in a group with other rappers called Slaughterhouse. In several interviews, Joe had mentioned that he didn’t receive any royalties from the album he made with the group. In a recent interview with Sway, Eminem confessed that the Slaughterhouse album that was made did not do well in terms of sales and that no one made any money from it. So if that be the case, how is that out of all the Slaughterhouse members, Joe is the only one that is having an issue?
I do believe that Joe needs to sit down and talk with Eminem about this. Making jabs at one another isn’t going to solve anything. But this is if Joe is willing to talk about it with him. Right so, I hope MGK doesn’t respond, I hope Eminem doesn’t respond to everyone else that’s saying something
irrelevant and I hope Joe has a talk with Eminem, maybe even bring him on his podcast for more listeners. Anyways, Killshot is far better than what MGK had to offer.
Whew, finally, we’re at the end. Boy did I have a mouthful of stuff to say. Thankfully, I’m done and have nothing more to add. Anyways, tell me how you feel about what I said.
How did you feel when you heard of Mac Miller’s death, were you as shocked as I was? Are you still in disbelief?
What are your thoughts on the whole Nicki and Cardi B drama? Do you think that it’s time for them to end this “feud”?
And what do you think about the whole Eminem, Kamikaze and the MGK situation? Do you think Joe Budden should respond or should he have a talk with Eminem to clear things up? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
