5 Self-Care Tips For University Students
Ah, university! The place that some people love and some people hate. A place that in some way or the other, prepares you for life and all its inner workings
(no not really). While university may seem fun and all, at some point, you’re going to feel overwhelmed and stressed out, even if it’s just your first year. But not to worry, I’ve come bearing gifts. Self-care tips that will help lessen that overwhelming and stressed feeling.
Do Some Yoga Poses
When you wake up and before you go to bed, try to incorporate a few yoga poses in your routine. I know this may sound like some spiritual healing type of thing, but find your center. Once you do that, you’ll be 10x more focused and ready to kick university in the balls!
Yoga, like regular gym workouts, helps to get more blood flowing to your brain. You will feel 5x better during the day and way more relaxed. Between classes, if you’re able to, do a few poses too. Do the simple ones that don’t take a lot of effort and the ones where people won’t look at like “what are you doing?”.
If you’re not a yoga person, going for a run or just taking a stroll is good too. Clear your head of all the negative stuff. You’ll totally forget about how much of a
delightful person your professor was.
Ariana Grande said it best, “Just keep breathing and breathing and breathing and breathing”. Your assignment got you in knots? Stop, close your eyes and take a deep breath.
Put your work on pause for an hour or however long you want to take. Go somewhere quiet or if you have ear plugs, put them in. Relax your body, free your mind of everything school related and just think positive thoughts.
When you’re done, doing your assignments become easier and less daunting. You might even figure out the solution and then say to yourself “I’ve been stressing over THIS and it was right in front of me!?” (I’ve been down that road).
I know you’ve been eyeing that delicious thick slice of cake. You know you want it. So just cave in and buy it. Remember, you’re not hurting yourself when you do it. You may be hurting your pocket but you’ll thank yourself later.
Treat yourself to something nice. Take a load off and pamper yourself. Go out for breakfast, brunch, lunch or dinner. You’ll be happy once you do. And if you want, bring a friend along. There’s nothing wrong with having company. Just treat yourself every chance you get. Have your cake and eat it too damn it!

Lay Off The Caffeine And Alcohol
I know most of you are like “She didn’t just say what I think she just said.” But yes, I said it. You don’t need to have a latte or a macchiato every day. You don’t need energy drinks every day either.
Need energy? Go to bed early. Can’t go to bed early? Take a B12 vitamin every morning, drink tons of water and try not to skip breakfast. Caffeine is good and all but if you want to relax then that ain’t it. Try tea instead, less caffeine and a whole lot more soothing too. At least you won’t have to feel grouchy.
Oh and let’s not forget the excessive drinking. If you’re not a drinker then you’re fine. But to those of you who think getting drunk is cool, a hangover isn’t. I’m not saying you should stop drinking completely, but don’t drink alcohol excessively. It puts a strain on your body and you don’t want that.
Take A Day Off
“Oh yes! I said it, I said it. I said it ’cause I can.” Be like Bruno Mars in The Lazy Song. Just lay in your bed and tell people to leave a message at the tone. Because on that day, you’re not doing anything, nothing at all! Just make sure when you’re letting yourself hang loose, your door is completely locked so no one can barge in. Just be sure to throw on some clothes before you step outside of your room.
The weekends aren’t enough for you to “recuperate” after a long week of classes and other activities. So pick a day out of week where you know that you don’t necessarily have to be in class and just relax. It may hurt your attendance a bit (if your school takes that into account) but it’s worth it.
You need your “me time”. Time to just ignore your alarm and sleep in. Ignore your phone and all its notifications. Time to relax and be free. So take a day off once or twice a month when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Remember, you want to keep your hair on your head and not in your hands or on the floor. You can even get a stress ball to keep your hands occupied. The best part is, you can use these tips in your daily life after you’ve graduated from university.
Just remember to take care of yourself while you’re in university. Take care of yourself before you take care of somebody else. Self-care is the best kind of care. And don’t forget to always love yourself.
